Otters Make a Comeback in Nepal — and Communities Are Leading the Way

In Nepal’s Lower Karnali Watershed, communities and conservationists are bringing otters back from the brink. WWF’s three-year project has empowered Indigenous Sonaha and Tharu people to protect the river, restore fish habitats, and guard against illegal fishing.

Then came a joyful surprise — after 185 years, the Asian small-clawed otter, the tiniest otter in the world, was spotted again.

It’s proof that when people and nature work together, even the rarest species can find their way home.
